What is the PE & Sport Premium?

In March 2013, the government announced that it would provide additional funding to primary schools to support the improvement of provision of PE and sport.

The Premium Funding is designed to help children get an active start in life, supporting primary schools to improve the quality of their Physical Education provision so that pupils experience the benefits of regular exercise – from becoming healthier both mentally and physically to improved behaviour and better academic achievement. The funding is a ring-fenced grant for English primary schools to provide additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE, sport and physical activity.

What should schools spend the PE & Sport Premium on?

We will use our PE and Sport Premium funding strategically to not only see improvements across the above key indicators, but to also support Combs pupils to achieve our Vision and Aims.

Schools should use the Primary PE and Sport Premium to achieve the following:

  • Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport activities that your school provides.
  • Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.

Engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity, for example by:

  • Providing targeted activities or support to involve and encourage the least active children
  • Encouraging active play during break times and lunchtimes
  • Establishing, extending or funding attendance of school sports clubs and activities, or broadening the variety offer
  • Raising attainment in our infant school by introducing our year 2 children to swimming lessons. This will provide them with a head start in meeting the  requirements of the national curriculum before the end of key stage 2 - every child should leave primary school able to swim.
